An Introduction to the Kalacakra Tantra
The Kalacakra Tantra is a system of union in the basis, the path and the result, all of which are expressed in the Yab-Yum symbol. To study and practice it is a powerful means to harmony within ourselves and consequently in our relationships, both intimate and societal, as well as in our relationship with the environment.
To practice the Kalacakra Tantra requires empowerment, such as that being bestowed by His Holiness Sakya Trizin Rinpoche in London on13-15 June 2010.
As an introduction open to all, this weekend course will enable participants to begin to recognise some of the special features of this tantra. The course will utilise meditation, discussion, role-play and movement exercises, and will focus on practical issues encountered in personal relationships.
Buddha taught that everything arises dependent on other things and that nothing happens by itself. Positive harmonious relationships depend on inner integration, of which the most powerful are found in tantra. Yab-Yum is a Tibetan term meaning Father – Mother union. The image of male and female sexual union known as Yab-Yum symbolises the harmonising of aspects of inner experience which when in conflict bring about disturbance, distress and dispute. Our personal relationships can only be harmonious when we ourselves integrate contrary elements within ourselves.
During the eighties, Andy Weistreich was spiritual program co-ordinator at Jamyang Buddhist Centre in London. In 1989, he and his wife established Saraswati Buddhist Group in Somerset. Andy first took the Kalacakra Empowerment in Madison in 1981, and got straight into the study and practice, trying to support other Kalacakra practitioners with materials, teachings, retreats etc. In 1998 he and David Reigle set up the International Kalacakra Network (www.kalachakranet.org) a major source of support for Kalachakra practitioners.
Since retiring in July 2007, Andy has undertaken a year of solitary retreats, including the Kalacakra retreat.
